ARE YOU SUFFERING FROM KNEE BURSITIS AND TENDONITIS THAT KEEPS COMING BACK EVERYTIME YOU RECOVER AND THEN GET BACK TO EXERCISE?

Knee pain from bursitis and tendonitis is stubborn to completely go away. It flares down, but then comes back once you think you’re over it.

It’s tender to touch in a certain spot or two. And it might be painful to kneel down. As it gets worse, normal activities like walking become painful.

The good news is that it’s possible to resolve bursitis and tendonitis and get back to feeling normal! It’s even possible to return to exercises such as weight lifting and jogging. Since our treatment approach focuses on treating the root of the problem, it will go away for the long-term without relying on medications or injections.

WHAT CAUSES KNEE BURSITIS & TENDONITIS FOR PEOPLE OF EL PASO?

Both knee bursitis and tendonitis have the same root cause. Even though they hurt in different areas of the knee, it happens because of the same problem nearly always.

The root problem is a muscle imbalance that causes certain muscles to pull too much. This leads to either the tendon or the bursa becoming irritated. The tendon attaches the muscle to the bone and there are many bursa around the knee joint to help keep the tendons from rubbing on each other the wrong way. But bursa can become irritated too.

KNEE BURSITIS & TENDONITIS SYMPTOMS

The classic symptoms of knee bursitis are pain and swelling in a specific spot on the knee. There are 4 bursa that are commonly affected - the suprapatellar bursa (right above the knee cap), the prepatellar bursa (right on the front of the knee cap), the inrapatella bursa (right below the knee cap, and the pes anserine bursa (on the inner side of the knee slightly below the knee joint).

Tendonitis most commonly causes pain right above or below the knee cap. It can also hurt on the inner part of the knee between the knees. The most common is called patellar tendonitis. When youngsters that are still growing get this, they may also get a bump on their shin bone where the tendon attaches. Doctors call it Osgood Schlatter’s which is when the bone thickens because of the tendon pulling so hard. When youngsters are still growing, the bones are more pliable.

Both problems get worse the more active you are. Both conditions can get very painful with simple things like walking and bending your knees. If this problem gets severe, it will hurt constantly, possibly even keeping you awake at night.

KNEE BURSITIS & TENDONITIS TREATMENT OPTIONS

Treatment for bursitis and tendonitis is all over the place when it comes to the healthcare field. And it’s all focused on treating the symptoms. Doctors will tell you rest to let the inflammation calm down, use ice, and take pain medications. If the problem is bad enough and doesn’t get better with that, they might recommend using a brace or sleeve and possibly an injection for more serious pain relief.

In very rare cases, there are surgeons that will do a bursectomy procedure. But they’ll have you try physical therapy before that. General physical therapists are not used to treating bursitis and tendonitis, since they tend to focus on helping people after surgery. They’ll usually treat a knee bursitis/tendonitis patient nearly the same as a tendonitis patient.

This is not good because in their efforts to help you, they’ll likely have you exercise in a way that feeds into the problem. The most common mistake general physical therapists make is that they have bursitis and tendonitis patients strengthen their quadricep muscles on the front of the thigh. This makes bursitis and tendonitis worse over time because it causes the quads to pull on the knee tendon and further smash the bursa.

HOW KNEE BURSITIS & TENDONITIS AFFECTS PEOPLE

Bursitis and tendonitis of the knee causes people to not trust their knee. Sometimes they’ll feel fine in the knee joint and other times they’ll get painful and swollen. It often is hard to pinpoint what activities cause it because at times walking will be fine, but then one day it starts to hurt. Going to the gym might feel great, but then it starts to hurt.

Once the bursitis and tendonitis comes on it is stubborn to get rid of! People often avoid exercises and gradually get out of shape and overweight. That is NOT their fault! It’s the healthcare field’s fault for not properly handling bursitis and tendonitis at the root of the problem.
